WHAT ARE WE MAKING?

The Starks may still say "Winter is Coming," but the sky and thermometer outside my window right now tells me "Winter is HERE." So, we offer our January project, the Crocodile Stitch Hooded Capelet, to ward off the Winter and the White Walkers.

And, as a Game of Thrones and Crochet fanatic, I am certain that this lovely design will receive the seal of approval from Daenerys Targaryen, "First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Lady Paramount of the Crownlands, Princess of Dragonstone, Queen of Meereen, and Khaleesi of the Great Green Sea!"

Let's get started!

About the Design

I l-o-v-e textured crochet stitches and in this capelet I’m adding another one I think is fun and beautiful: Puff Stitches (PS). I find it works fast and its fluffiness is so cozy! Last week we released a tutorial for the PS and you can watch it HERE.

Many of you already did the November CAL on the Fingerless Gloves and are experts on the Crocodile Stitch, but if this is your first time trying this stitch, I invite you to check our video and also to practice it making the hand section of the Crocodile Stitch Fingerless gloves as a practice sample before you tackle the Capelet. You can find the pattern for the gloves HERE.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO GET STARTED?

YARN:

You can use either Bonita Yarns Merino Dream (Sport weight; 50% wool and 50%) or Bonita Yarns Dream Baby (DK weight; 100% acrylic). Please refer to the table below for number of skeins.

TOOLS:

Odyssey H/5.00 mm hook or Candy Shop H/5.00 mm hook - Hook size is intentionally bigger than suggested for yarn weight to create a flattering drape.

* Stitch markers

* Yarn needle for weaving in your ends

Here are the number of skeins you'll need. Note I have included the amounts needed for customizing the capelet into a poncho.

Use promo code ‘BONITAFURLS’ at check out to get 15% off your yarn and

WHAT WILL BE WORKING ON FIRST?

In Part one of our CAL we will be working on the Capelet or Poncho section entirely from bottom edging to collar. You can even wear the section we are making today, as is, without the hood.

Gauge:

In Sport weight (Merino Dream) yarn and H crochet hook in V-st (dc 1, ch 1, dc 1) pattern:

3 ½  V-sts and 3 ½  rows = 2”

Special Stitches Used:

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) – Yo and insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the dc of previous row. Complete as for a regular dc stitch.

Puff Stitch (PS) – Working loosely: yo, insert hook in st indicated, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook in same stitch, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (5 loops on hook), yo, insert hook once again into the same stitch, yo, pull through and bring yarn up to height of rest of stitches (7 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook.

V-st - (dc 1, ch 1, dc 1) in stitch indicated.

 Pattern Notes:

1. The Hooded Capelet is worked in two pieces (hood and cape) that are sewn together in the finishing stages. The Capelet section is crocheted in the round and the hood is crocheted as a flat piece.

2. This project uses the Crocodile Stitch for the embellished edges of Capelet and hood and Puff Stiches to produce a textured and warm outerwear.

3. In short, the Crocodile Stitch is formed by a two-row repeat: a row of V-sts followed by a row of scales (or shells). This is a fairly easy pattern to execute and fast to memorize. The only novelty about this design is that the scales are crocheted in front of the V-sts with clusters of front post double crochets (fpdc) from top to bottom, then from bottom to top, as opposed to working them on top of the row, like in most shell patterns.

4. The pattern is written for two versions: Capelet or Poncho. If making the Capelet, follow round numbers written in black. If making the poncho follow rounds numbers listed in blue.

5. In the pattern, instructions are given to size Small – Large in black font; changes for sizes X-Large – XXX-Large are in ( ) and color coded in red for easy identification.

A Note About Comments

Furls Crochet Team

November 9th, 2016

Hey everybody! Shortly into our CALs we realized that our out-of-the-box blog comment system wouldn't let us reply to your comments.

We've since installed Disqus, above, which allows you guys to respond to each other and us to reply to your questions; seems like a no-brainer!

We will continue to display existing comments from the old comment system on all existing blog posts. All future commenting will be done through Disqus. Enjoy!
