If you are visiting this CAL for the first time, please visit the posts below for the previous weeks:

Week One

Week Two

Week Three

Alas, we arrive at my least-favorite phase of the CAL, week four, when we must say goodbye.  But only until the next CAL, of course!  Once again, I find myself in awe of all you wonderful Furls CAL members, your kindness and enthusiasm and talent.  Through the CAL you brought me much joy, and as usual, left me wanting more!

This CAL featured my newest technique (which was a little scary for me…how will it go?  Will they like it?) and to my great relief and appreciation I learned that you loved the looks of it, and just as importantly, you found the instructions clear and easy to execute. This group seems to have few questions, and for those that do come up there are always lots of members quick to lend a hand.  That just warms my heart! As a designer and host, I feel like it’s all just fun, like being dropped off at a playground instead of at the office.

I’d love to keep in touch with all my new friends, so if you ever want to know what  I’m up to, you can reach me here:

Embossed Crochet Boho Vest - Part Two

by Lianka Azulay

Special Stiches:

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) – yo and insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the st of previous row. Complete as for a regular dc stitch.

V-st – (dc 1, ch 1, dc 1) in st indicated.

V-st inc (increase) – (V-st, ch 1, dc 1, ch 1, dc 1) in st indicated. – A V-st increase counts as 3 V-sts.

Pattern Notes:

  1. In part two of the vest we will work the lacy section (collar and body) in rows of V-sts and finish it up by adding an edging of Crocodile Stitch around the back. The Crocodile Stitch embellishment is made on top of the last 4 (4, 5) rounds of DCs and it’s optional. If you decide not to include it, it won’t affect the vest’s construction.
  1. The way we work the V-sts rows gives you the opportunity to customize the length of the vest as you wish. You’ll work even rows of V-st on top of V-st and increase every row, on five corners of the hexagon. It becomes a very repetitive and meditative type of crocheting. You can try the vest on as you go and see what length suits you best. Instructions here are given to meet the length you see in pattern pictures.
  1. The chains in the V-sts and V-st inc do NOT counts as sts in the row counts.
  2. In the pattern, stitch counts are given to size Small – Medium in black font; changes for sizes Large – X-Large are in and 2 X-large - 3 X-large are ( ) and color coded in blue and red for easy identification.

Collar and Body Directions:

Row 30 (Row 35, Row 36): With right side of work facing you, count counterclockwise 20 (23, 26) sts beginning from first st of Rnd 29 (34, 35). Join yarn to 20th (23rd, 26th) st, ch 3 (count as dc here and throughout),  (skip next 2 dc, V-st in next dc) 5 (6, 7) times, skip next 2 dc, V-st inc (V-st, ch 1, dc 1, ch 1, dc 1) in next dc, ch 29 (ch 35, ch 38), skip next 29 (35, 38) dc, V-st inc in next dc, [(skip next 2 dc, V-st in next dc) 10 (12, 12) times, skip next 2 dc, V-st inc in next dc] twice, ch 29 (ch 35, ch 38), skip next 29 (35, 38) dc, V-st inc in next dc, (skip next 2 dc, V-st in next dc) 5 (6, 7) times, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc; turn. – Note: count each V-st inc as 3 V-sts here and throughout.  [45 V-sts + 58 ch + 2 dc = 105 sts (51 V-sts + 70 ch + 2 dc = 123 sts; 53 V-sts + 76 ch + 2 dc = 131 sts)

Note about customizing armhole sizing:  After finishing Row 30 (Row 35, Row 36), try the vest on. For those who needs extra room on the sleeves, here is an easy fix: undo the row, and when you get to make the long chain for the armhole you can add multiples of 3 to your chain. Each multiple of 3 will add one V-st to where you have the armhole chain. Make sure to make the same number of chains on the opposite armhole.

Row 31 (Row 36, Row 37): Ch 3, (V-st in next V-st) 6 (7, 8) times, V-st inc in corner V-st. V-st in next V-st, (skip 2 ch, V-st in next ch) 10 (11, 12) times, V-st in next V-st, V-st inc in corner V-st, [(V-st in next V-st) 12 (14, 14) times, V-st inc in corner V-st] twice, V-st in next V-st, (skip 2 ch, V-st in next ch) 10 (11, 12) times, V-st in next V-st, V-st inc in corner ch-1 sp, (V-st in next ch-1 sp) 6 (7, 8) times, dc in last dc; turn. – 75 V-sts + 2 dc = 77 sts (83 V-sts + 2 dc = 85 sts, 87 V-sts + 2 dc = 89 sts)

Row 30 where armhole is set up completed on a small/medium size

Note: From Rows 32 to 48 (Rows 37 to Row 54, Rows 38 to Row 55):  You’ll be crocheting a V-st in each V-st and increase with a V-st inc (V-st, ch 1, dc 1, ch 1, dc 1) in each of the five corners. Crocheting in this manner, you’ll increase 10 V-sts each row. You can customize the length of your vest as you wish by try it on as you go. The instructions here will produce as vest as showcased in pattern pictures.

Row 32 (Row 37, Row 38): Ch 3, * V-st in each V-st across to corner V-st, V-st inc in corner V-st, repeat from * to last corner V-st, V-st in each V-st to last dc, dc in last dc; turn. – 85 V-sts + 2 dc = 87 sts (93 V-sts + 2 dc = 95 sts, 97 V-sts + 2 dc = 99 sts)

Row 33 (Row 38, Row 39): Rep Row 32 (Row 37, Row 38). – 95 V-sts + 2 dc = 97 sts (103 V-sts + 2 dc = 105 sts, 107 V-sts + 2 dc = 109 sts)

A Note About Comments

Furls Crochet Team

November 9th, 2016

Hey everybody! Shortly into our CALs we realized that our out-of-the-box blog comment system wouldn't let us reply to your comments.

We've since installed Disqus, above, which allows you guys to respond to each other and us to reply to your questions; seems like a no-brainer!

We will continue to display existing comments from the old comment system on all existing blog posts. All future commenting will be done through Disqus. Enjoy!
