Free Crochet Shawl Pattern - Sampler Shawl

For this Crochet-A-Long with Furls we will be making a Sampler Shawl that is sure to be a great project for any crocheter, new or seasoned! This crochet project is full of different stitches and combinations that won’t let you get bored but will still give you the opportunity to mindlessly stitch away! Finished off with some fringe that really makes a statement, get ready to get compliments every time you wear this piece!

This week we will just be getting our hooks and yarn ready to start making this Sampler Shawl next week! So grab a hook and yarn and get to making some test swatches! The following 2 weeks will consist of creating the first half of the shawl and then finishing the second half and adding your fringe!

PATTERN DETAILS

Finished Size
62” x 14” plus 4” of fringe if added

Gauge
16 sts x 6 rows in dc is 4” x 4”

With so many different stitches used in this pattern your gauge may change. Feel free to change hook size if you want a different drape or size for your final piece.

Chain Stitch - ch / Slip Stitch - Sl St / Stitch(es) - st(s) / Skip - sk / Single Crochet - sc/ Half Double Crochet- hdc / Double Crochet - dc / Treble Crochet - Tr 

Special Stitches

Foundation Half Double Crochet – Fhdc – Chain 3, yarn over, insert hook into 3rd chain from hook, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 1 loop on hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all loops, (1 foundation half double crochet with chain at bottom). *Yarn over, insert hook to bottom of the stitch you just made. It will look like the top or “V” of a stitch. Yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 1 loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all loops, repeat from * to desired count.

Puff Stitch – ps – (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space and pull up a loop) 4 times in same stitch or space, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

Bobble Stitch – BO – Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops (4 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops (5 loops on hook). Yarn over, and draw through all loops on hook. Continue to next stitch. 

Third Loop - 3rd loop - Worked in the 3rd loop or back of a hdc st. When looking at the wrong side of a hdc there is a 3rd loop that is located under the top of the stitch.

Shell Stitch - Follow Row Directions, but make note that multiple sts are worked in 1 st to create a shell.

PART ONE

Ready to start your Sampler Shawl? At this point you should have picked your hook and yarn and swatched to get gauge! This week we will start by making the first half of the Sampler Shawl!

Pattern Notes

Pattern Begins

Row 1  - 250 Fhdc.
Row 2  - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 3  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, 1 bo, *4 hdc, 1 bo, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, 1 hdc in each remaining st. [250 sts]
Row 4  - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 5  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 6  - Ch 1, turn, hdc in each st and ch-sp across.
Row 7  - Ch 1, turn, sc in each 3rd loop across.
Row 8  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 9  - Ch 1, turn, 3 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remains, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 10  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 11  - Ch 1, turn, sc across.
Row 12  - Ch 1, turn, 1 sc, *sk 1, hdc 5  in next st (shell made), sk 1, 1 sc in next st, repeat from * until 1 st remains, sc in last st. [62 shell stitch sets]
Row 13  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, ch 1, *sc in 3rd hdc of shell, ch 1, 1 hdc in sc, ch 1, repeat from * until 1 shell st remains, sc in 3rd hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc in last st.
Row 14 - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 15 - Ch 2, turn, dc across.
Row 16  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 PS in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 17 - Ch 2, turn, dc across.
Row 18  - Ch 1, turn, 3 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 19 - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 20  - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 21  - Ch 1, turn, hdc in each 3rd loop across.
Row 22  - Ch 2, turn, 2 dc, *sk 2 sts, tr in next st, ch 1, tr in 1st skipped st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, 1 dc in each remaining st.
Row 23  - Ch 1, turn, sc across.

PART TWO

Did you finish up your first half of the Sampler Shawl?! I sure hope you are loving all of the stitches so far! The second half of the pattern continues today just below! Enjoy!  

Row 24  - Ch 2, turn, pick up 2 loops in the 2nd chain from the hook using the front and back of the chain, pick up a loop in the 1st sc, pick up a loop in the next 2-sc, (6 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all loops, yarn over pull through one loop (eye of star created) *pick up a loop in the eye, pick up a loop in the last loop of the star, pick up a loop in the same stitch as the last loop of the previous star, pick up a loop in the next 2-sc, (6 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all loops, yarn over, pull through one loop. Repeat from * to end, hdc in the same stitch as the last star. 
Row 25  - Ch 1, turn, sc across, working into each petal and eye.
Row 26  - Ch 1, turn, 3 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 27  - Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 2 st remains, hdc in remaining st.
Row 28  - Ch 1, turn, 3 hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, hdc in each remaining st.
Row 29 - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 30  - Ch 1, turn, sc across.
Row 31  - Ch 1, turn, 5 hdc, 1 bo, *9 hdc, 1 bo, repeat from * until 5 sts remain, 1 hdc in each remaining st. [250 sts]
Row 32  - Ch 1, turn, sc across.
Row 33  - Ch 2, turn, 3 dc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 PS in next st, ch 1, sk 1, dc in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, dc in each remaining st.
Row 34  - Ch 1, turn, sc across.
Row 35  - Ch 2, turn, dc across.
Row 36  - Ch 1, turn, *1 sc, 1 dc, repeat from * to end.
Row 37  - Ch 1, turn, *1 sc, 1 dc, repeat from * to end.
Row 38  - Ch 1, turn, hdc across.
Row 39  - Ch 1, turn, hdc in each 3rd loop across.
Row 40  - Ch 2, turn, 3 dc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, dc in each remaining st.
Row 41  - Ch 2, turn, 2 dc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, dc in remaining st.
Row 42  - Ch 2, turn, dc across.
Row 43  - Ch 2, turn, 3 dc, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, dc in each remaining st.
Row 44 - Ch 2, turn, dc across, finish off.

Trimming 

  1. Reattach your yarn in the side of the last stitch of Row 1 to work in the row ends.

Row 1  - Ch 1, place 1 sc in each sc and hdc row end and place 2 sc in each dc row end, then in last worked stitch place 2 more sc sts [55+ 2 sts], sc in each stitch of last row [250 sts], again in last worked stitch place 2 more sc sts, then like the first side place 1 sc in each sc and hdc row end and place 2 sc in each dc row end [55 + 2 sts], finish off. [366 total sts] 

  1. Cut 366 - 8” pieces of yarn to fold in half to create fringe. Attach one piece of fringe in each sc stitch made in last row created around the 3 sided of the shawl. 
  1. Steam and trim fringe, now enjoy!
